I am so impressed that you're working on Christmas shopping already. I wish I could say I was, but...alas.
Oooooh, you'll love writing a screenplay, though it's much different from writing a novel.
The format, of course, is quite different. There are templates you can get for Word that will format for you. There's also some freeware you can download. I can check on that for you, if you like, as I know someone who uses one.
I have both Movie Magic Screenwriter 2000 and Final Draft, but MMS2K is my software of preference. I only have the latter because I won it in a screenwriting contest.
I can recommend some very good screenwriting books. I especially recommend two books by the teacher I just had for class. His name is Tom Lazarus and he wrote the movie Stigmata, among many others.
The books are Secrets of Film Writing and Rewriting Secrets for Screenwriters.
I just got a new book that I'm thoroughly enjoying, too. Writing for Emotional Impact by Karl Iglesias.
And, of course, people always recommend reading a lot of screenplays. Personally, I did at first...or at least glanced at them. Not so much now.
If there's any information you need, just yell my direction. I love screenwriting as much as I love novel writing. Both are great.
