Ending line: “Nikki! Nikki!” Alex’s eyes were glazed, and he thrashed wildly, fighting her grasp, trying to go after the girl, even as she held him back.
Darling: Tendrils of fog wrapped themselves around the boat, insinuating themselves in between the embracing couple and then, at her command, ripping them violently apart. Alex was thrown towards her; the mists claimed the Balance’s child, pulling her deep into the bottomless depths of the lake.
