(personal) Wonderings

I have two big things to do this year - (1) teach myself Wordpress and get my site back up and running, and (2) teach myself how to podcast and get Horseman out in audio form. Wonder which I should start with?

Opinions?

I've been seriously considering podcasting as well. I'd conspire with you in 2010 to make this happen, if you like.

It's going to happen in 2010 - I bought the damn mixer board and the new computer, and I'll be damned if it gathers any more dust. But I have to figure out which will come first - I only have so many techy braincells, and trying to do both at once will overload them.

Are you going to podcast the Source Chronicles? (That is the name, right?)

That's my thought. I was going to do a test run with a short story I wrote for the series - but it needs to be edited first (by me, let alone an external source).

I can really only do Seeker - book 1 - at this point. Only one that's been fully edited. Currently in the middle of writing book 4 - Guardians. SO...podcasting is my thought.

Many options to play with. I need podcasting software, and to decide if I will use my PC or my I-Book for this purpose.

Well, I'm planning to use Audacity (which is free) on my PC. If you're serious about it, I've heard good things about Garageband, but it's Mac only.

I need to learn Wordpress too.

It's supposed to be fairly intuitive, but, well, we all know how odd Val's intuition is.

Wordpress is super easy once it's installed; I can do quite a bit with existing tools/templates, etc and if you need someone to ping, call on me: here is one of mine: journalofnursingjocularity.com and here is another smartshopperssecrets.com and ellenburgcommunitynews.com Nothing super fancy, but stress-free and easy to do and update.

Coolness. Easy to update is what I want - I can't afford a webmistress anymore, so it's up to me. But I'm NOT tech-intuitive, so I'm hoping I can pick it up pretty quickly. I'll check out your sites and might definitely call if I run into trouble - thanks!

You should so find some random person who used to work with you who is going to school for website design and hit her up for help. *coughs* I don't know of this Wordpress you speak of, but speak html, css and most of the other cool web design languages...plus I will be taking Web Design Two this coming semester and will need to design a site for the final project. Since I'm a student and mostly bored to death in the frozen, snow-covered region and miss you, I would be willing to do it for free. Not sure how often you need updates or what you would be looking for long-term, but free is the current friend rate. I could even teach you how to edit the code for self updates if that would be something you would like to do. *smiles* Let me know if you're interested. (Also, if you're looking for a What-You-See-Is-What-You-Get software to make your own site, Dreamweaver by Adobe rocks and has loads of online tutorials)

If said random person ever updated her journal so I would know that, I might. :D Congrats on going back to school!

I'm contemplating Wordpress because I want to be about to control it myself, but I'll definitely hit you up for help. I'm not very confident in my tech skills yet.

Understandable. *blushes* I have been REALLY bad about keeping this updated, besides a few random posts here and there. And thanks! Going back and liking what I'm doing has been a huge change. I hope all is well and e-mail me here with any questions, since I'm equally as bad as checking my e-mail as I am with updating my journal, but come here to read how everyone is doing.

I'd start with the site if I were you. That way when you start doing the podcasting and someone wants to learn more about your books you can link them to a site that's already up. Good luck!

[identity profile] vg-ford.livejournal.com 2009-12-30 06:54 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, I'm thinking that's my first step. Thanks!

Definitely set up WordPress first, then install the Podcasting plugin and get that going. (There are other plugins, but I can vouch for this one.)

Oooh, cool! Thank you!
