(health/food) Ponderings on a morning when I was late.

So, I was running late this morning - breakfast skipped in favor of a shower, cursing at the people in front of me on the highway, hoping that my gas gauge wouldn't hit E before I hit the parking lot. Just general craziness. I ran through the drivethrough at McDonald's and grabbed two biscuit sandwiches and a cup of tea, knowing that if I didn't eat SOMETHING, I would be killing people by 11:30 pm (my first break).

And as I was wolfing down the sandwich, I realized - this tastes awful. Greasy, nasty - it was food, but barely. And I wondered - what happened?

McDonald's used to be one of my favorite "treat" foods - especially the biscuit sandwiches. Now - well, I ate one, and the other is in my trash can. I guess I'm growing up - now I just have to start remembering that I cannot stay up until midnight doing things and be up with any time to do anything in the morning. :)

Luckily, our new cafe (it started last week) is fabulous, committed to local food and makes everything fresh. So for lunch, I'm redeeming my tummy with a taco salad (light on the sour cream and cheese, heavy on the homemade guacamole and tomatoes) and steamed broccoli in sweet chile sauce. Mmmmmmm.

They even do a farmer's market on Thursdays! They have local produce that you can buy! How cool is that????

More on food later. I'm so glad it's summer.

Yeah, my tastes have refined in the last few years, too. I think it's a combination of age and learning what REAL food tastes like.

That said, ramen is still a comfort food of mine when I need it.

I haven't eaten any McDonalds in a good eight years or so... My brother got so very violently sick after eating there once that my family's been boycotting it ever since.

It's gross. I'd much, much rather eat something healthier.

Yes, since Heidi and I have been eating better we have noticed there are a lot of foods we used to eat that just don't taste good anymore.

Yeah, I stopped eating McDonald's awhile back because I just always felt so awful after eating it. Had it again recently and it still tasted okay, but not as good as it used to. And it made me sick for about a week, so I don't plan on trying it again for a very long time. Or ever. I could live with never eating it again.

Just last week I ended up eating at McDonalds, Burger King and KFC three days in a row. All three of them, once my favorite places to eat, were terrible. Yes, my tastes have changed since I last ate fast food, but I also think the food itself has changed. The ingredients were visibly substandard.
Next time I’ll know. If I’m going to be stuck eating with other people who chose fast food I’m taking a bag lunch along.

I'm the same way on soda. I used to be a confirmed Dr. Pepper addict, and now I have maybe one a week... on a busy week. I just don't feel very good after I drink one, and since I'm certainly not giving up my hooch (FROM MY COLD, DEAD HANDS), soda has pretty much fallen by the wayside.

Yay, getting older!
