So, I was running late this morning - breakfast skipped in favor of a shower, cursing at the people in front of me on the highway, hoping that my gas gauge wouldn't hit E before I hit the parking lot. Just general craziness. I ran through the drivethrough at McDonald's and grabbed two biscuit sandwiches and a cup of tea, knowing that if I didn't eat SOMETHING, I would be killing people by 11:30 pm (my first break).

And as I was wolfing down the sandwich, I realized - this tastes awful. Greasy, nasty - it was food, but barely. And I wondered - what happened?

McDonald's used to be one of my favorite "treat" foods - especially the biscuit sandwiches. Now - well, I ate one, and the other is in my trash can. I guess I'm growing up - now I just have to start remembering that I cannot stay up until midnight doing things and be up with any time to do anything in the morning. :)

Luckily, our new cafe (it started last week) is fabulous, committed to local food and makes everything fresh. So for lunch, I'm redeeming my tummy with a taco salad (light on the sour cream and cheese, heavy on the homemade guacamole and tomatoes) and steamed broccoli in sweet chile sauce. Mmmmmmm.

They even do a farmer's market on Thursdays! They have local produce that you can buy! How cool is that????

More on food later. I'm so glad it's summer.

Yeah, my tastes have refined in the last few years, too. I think it's a combination of age and learning what REAL food tastes like.

That said, ramen is still a comfort food of mine when I need it.

Ramen is what I eat at home when I want a cigarette. For some reason, salty foods kill the nicotine craving. So I guess it's a comfort food for me as well.

Sorry to barge in. ;)

I love ramen. I just don't like the spice packets it comes with anymore - they're too salty for me.

But I think you're right - our tastes grow up along with us, and being exposed to REAL food (as opposed to additive-laden "fast food") really can change our tastes.

From: [identity profile] peartreealley.livejournal.com

I like the salt packets, but I tend to dilute and drain most of it out. Add an egg and a little tabasco sauce and I got plenty of flavor.

On the other hand, we've been trying to switch our cat from "McDonalds to Steak" (IE, trying to switch him to a healthier cat diet) and he just wants his damn 99 cent cheesburgers >_<

From: [identity profile] vg-ford.livejournal.com

Hee! We went through that too - our vet suggested combining the two (we were doing dry food) and gradually just taking the cheeseburgers out.

(Total threat hijack!)

Switching the kibble wasn't too much of a problem, he'll eat any kibble I give him. But I really want to switch him to at least a partial wet food diet (I'm even considering a raw diet, but I need to get him to eat something other than kibble first), and he's just not interested in the gooshy food.

I think I may need to tough love him and take away his kibble until he eats the gooshy food but when I've tried that in the past he gets all sad and whiny and I can't take it and give him his kibble back cos I can't stand the idea of him not eating anything. *weak*

Ah!

Well, ours have never had a problem eating gooshy food - have you tried something like tuna or ham or something like that? Ours tend to prefer the texture of the shreds to the pate - they don't like the pate at all and try to bury it usually. Maybe he's just not into the texture?

From: [identity profile] peartreealley.livejournal.com

He won't touch the pate at all, even if I try to mix it with kibble. I've had some luck with the chunks-in-gravy, but it's mostly licking the gravy and picking at the rest.

But hey, it's a start.

Thanks for the advice! I've been reading around the 'net as well, and I think I may be better armed to make this work now. >_>

We shall see. LOL

From: [identity profile] vg-ford.livejournal.com

Mixing it with kibble might be your best bet - and the shreds work well for that. We also found that if it's not all seafood flavor, our three won't touch it - so he might not like certain parts of it.

Good luck!

I haven't eaten any McDonalds in a good eight years or so... My brother got so very violently sick after eating there once that my family's been boycotting it ever since.

It's gross. I'd much, much rather eat something healthier.

From: [identity profile] vg-ford.livejournal.com

I'm feeling that way now - not so much that I felt sick, but I felt uncomfortably full, and that which had tasted good before just tasted like...food. Not bad, but not something I really cared to eat anymore.

I want my food to taste GOOD, not just be something I put in my mouth.

From: [identity profile] macfrode.livejournal.com

Yes, since Heidi and I have been eating better we have noticed there are a lot of foods we used to eat that just don't taste good anymore.

From: [identity profile] vg-ford.livejournal.com

Exactly. And now that we're getting things like eggs and milk from the Co-op/farmers market, the stuff from the regular grocery is just...meh.

Too bad eating well is so darned expensive...

From: [identity profile] shanrina.livejournal.com

Yeah, I stopped eating McDonald's awhile back because I just always felt so awful after eating it. Had it again recently and it still tasted okay, but not as good as it used to. And it made me sick for about a week, so I don't plan on trying it again for a very long time. Or ever. I could live with never eating it again.

From: [identity profile] vg-ford.livejournal.com

Ugh - mine didn't affect me quite that badly, although the grease sat really heavy in my tummy all morning. *hugs* I think I'll be avoiding them as well.

Health / Food

Just last week I ended up eating at McDonalds, Burger King and KFC three days in a row. All three of them, once my favorite places to eat, were terrible. Yes, my tastes have changed since I last ate fast food, but I also think the food itself has changed. The ingredients were visibly substandard.
Next time I’ll know. If I’m going to be stuck eating with other people who chose fast food I’m taking a bag lunch along.

Re: Health / Food

Yeah, I hear you. I stopped this morning and bought a loaf of bread and a jar of peanut butter - that way, if nothing else, I've got a peanut butter sandwich I can take to class with me.

I tried KFC's new grilled chicken - again, it wasn't BAD, it just wasn't all that good.

There are a lot of little shops in Concord that do "fast food" but with local ingrediants, like Dos Amigos Burritos and Bolocco - I'm just going to hit them instead! Or pack a lunch.

Oops. 11:30 am. *sigh* Seriously, not awake. But yeah, I get in at 9 am and have my first break at 11:30 am.

I'm the same way on soda. I used to be a confirmed Dr. Pepper addict, and now I have maybe one a week... on a busy week. I just don't feel very good after I drink one, and since I'm certainly not giving up my hooch (FROM MY COLD, DEAD HANDS), soda has pretty much fallen by the wayside.

Yay, getting older!

From: [identity profile] vg-ford.livejournal.com

Yay, getting older!

Bah, I refuse. :p

I used to be a diehard Dr. P addict too, but I can't have it anymore. Jones Cola is my new soda, but even that - I don't want more than one a day, or my ankles swell and I feel awful.

Bah again, I say. This getting old crap is for the birds. Where's MY Peter Pan, huh???
