(metrics) Ghostly children...

Starting Count: 282
Ending Count: 902
Net Gain: +620

Starting line:
“Spill it,” I ordered, when she came into my office a few moments later. “All of it.”

Ending line:
It’s nice, having my office be another room in my house. My day job really isn’t – I’m technically one of the two heads of Pendragon Shipping, the multinational company my grandfather created, but the position is mostly ceremonial. As my friends like to joke, I’m the Bruce Wayne of my generation. At least it’s a better comparison than Christina Onassis.

Darling:
“They’ve seen an apparition of a young woman,” Danielle said, looking over the notes she’d printed out. “And there are auditory phenomena – a young woman sobbing, crying out for her child. And something odd.”

“You mean odder than a ghost killing children?” I asked dryly, frowning at my screen.

“Funny,” she said. “Yes. Each of the children who died went the same way – wasting away. As if something was eating away at them.”

Oh yes. Next will be dead children, ghosts, and all sorts of lovely things.

This is the story about the orphanage that you were talking about at the last meeting, right?

I you want to throw in an occasional tidbit about the mundane approaches they've tried, here's a link to a quick summary of what people use to collect air samples:

A summa cannister quietly humming in a corner when she visits would be a nice touch.

Probably not useful for this, but I came across it and thought it looked like something you'd find a use for: OSHA has a web page on how to sample to see if you have anthrax:

Ooh, cool, thanks! Definitely will add some versimilitude to the story.
