I've been asked about this a couple of times, so I thought I'd post my ramblings on this one too.
Phoenix Rising (which is a placeholder title - not sure I like it, but it works) is set in a world much like our's, but with a slight twist. The last phoenix in the world died over 1000 years ago, and instead of being reborn, she split herself into 7 amber pendants and gifted them to the 7 girls who served her as priestesses.
These girls separated and married, passing the pendants down through the female line until the day when their descendents would gather all the pendants back together and bring the Phoenix back to the world, bringing True Magic back with Her.
However, (there's always a however, isn't there?) the rumor of the pendants has sparked the interest of a multibillionaire with a pathological fear of dying, and he's decided that if he owns all the pendants, he'll be able to use their magic to keep himself alive forever. So he's been hunting them, and he only needs one more.
That pendant is in the hands of a young career woman who knows not only that the pendant her mother gave her years ago is actually one of the Phoenix Tears, one of the most valuable jewels in the world, but knows the entire spell to bring the Phoenix back - or to confer eternal life. As the billionaire methodically hunts her down, she falls in with a former government assassin with secrets of his own and a personal reason for keeping her alive - she's the only one who can save his dying younger brother.
It's rough, it's ugly and I have no idea who most of the characters are, but I know one of them - Sebastian, the former assassin. He's a fun character - and fiercely devoted to his younger brother, who's dying of cancer. I don't know how the heroine saves him (or if she does). I don't know who wins. I do know that it's a grittier story than many of my others, and yes, it involves explosions.
