I did it! Got up at 7:30 am and went to the farmers market. My rewards?

- eggs laid THIS MORNING (omg, never buying eggs in the store again)
- rainbow chard (all your fault, [livejournal.com profile] enchantedonyx)
- beet greens (also your fault, since I like your idea of trying one new veggie a week)
- THE FIRST STRAWBERRIES OF THE SEASON!!!!
- a massive leek
- apricot-pineapple jam
- oatmeal bread, baked this morning
- challah, also baked this morning
- a cherry tomato plant, covered in flowers
- what he called a "slicing" tomato plant, just starting to flower but looking huge and lovely

I also got a sample of some compost that felt lovely, so I might go get some ($5 for a 50 lb bag? I'm there!) and found out when the pick-your-own place is opening their fields (after the 20th). I'm going to go up and pick a ton of strawberries - and make strawberry jam. Mmmm.

Today, I have a wonderfully fun to-do list:

- go to Yankee and get meat (mmm, meat)
- drop off steak dinner at Donna's
- Writer's group! Yay!

I also have to clean up the kitchen and write, but hey, whatever. :P

More later.

I'm so with you about the eggs. I buy them at a farm nearby that has happy chicken running around in the yard. I also get fresh milk there - that double heated, castrated stuff in the supermarket tastes like white water in comparison - and some cheese. And potatoes that look a bit more like gnomes than the store ones but tastes like potatoes for a change. I grow my own tomatoes and herbs for years now as well.

I'm finally in a place where I can grow my own, so I'm trying it. And yes, I'm now a convert. I get my milk at the co-op in cool glass bottles, and it does taste so much better than the stuff at the store!

Hooray! Where is the market you go to?

Are you talking about J&F Farms for the pick your own? They're in Derry and I <3 them and would so go picking with you!

Saturday mornings is the Concord market on Court Street - they block it off. Let me know some Friday night - you can crash over here and we'll go first thing.

The place with the strawberries is called Apple Hill Farm here in Concord, but Derry isn't too far - I would go there. This place has strawberries, blueberries, raspberries and apples for PYO, and they have peaches!!!

I also love Warren's in Madbury (I think) - out off Rt. 4 - they let kids in the fields, and don't care how much they eat. Let me know when you want to go - I want to make strawberry jam this year! We can make a day of it!

Hooray! I love PYO!

We have a place with fresh produce on Webster St in Manch - and a separate farmers market but they're only open during the day.

Ooh, man, that all sounds so good! Now I want to go to the Farmer's Market down the street! My wife and I go every now and again and get some sweet deals as well... :)

Mmmmm! Sounds so yummy! I need to go get strawberries to go with my rhubarb.

Ooh - I almost bought rhubarb! I'm thinking I want strawberry-rhubarb pie at some point.

Yeah, it's finally getting to the point where we get to have nice fresh produce!

I know! I was talking to one of the farmers and saying, "I missed you guys all winter!!!"
