(writing) How sad

How sad is it that I'm seriously considering writing the murder mystery? I've never written a mystery before. I've got NO idea what to write it about. No characters. No detective. No body (well, okay, in my writing, bodies are NOT that hard to come by). I blame it on my mother.

Seriously. My mother LOVES murder mysteries and got me hooked at a young age.

So, the mystery is definitely a possibility. Maybe something like Lord Darcy? Magic plus murder?

Definite possibilities.

I think it's a great idea. NaNo gets you lots of words on a page, but a lot of them are crap words. The story you end up with will need major revision. And if you've never written a murder mystery before you will need to do major revision anyway. So you don't lose anything by taking it on during NaNo. This is a project you want to do and find exciting, but you aren't emotionally attached to it like you would be a project you've been percolating for months or years. If you write one of the others you might end up being so concerned about little things that you don't get the words written. If you get behind on word count, you might drop the project.

This sounds like it would be such a fun project for you and a way to explore a new genre that you love. I really think you should do it.

True, but I'm a perfectionist, and I don't think I have enough time to truly get it to where I can write it. But I'm definitely going to write it - I now have my detective. :)

If you feel drawn to it, go for it! Nano is the best time to experiment.

Nano, in some respects, is a good time to go with something outside your normal genre. My first successful Nano 2 years ago was a humorous narrative of my accident - and those who have read it LOVE it. So why not?

Because I don't have enough time to prepare. :) I think I'll go for either the high fantasy or space opera, both of which I'm a little more comfortable with.

Hey, why not? That's how most of my stories get started. I had no interest in writing a vampire or a time travel novel until the story bug bit me. ;)

As for murder mysteries, I've been reading pretty much everything Charlaine Harris has written lately (I'm on the Aurora Teagarden stories atm), so of course I'm feeling tempted to do the same thing... :p

Seriously - I've got to get the complete set.

As for a murder mystery - do a clue outline - that's what I did with the witchy murder mystery. Of course, that's where it sits. I've got to go back and fill in the characters and their personalities (including the cat, Sebastian :D)
