Today's is Friday, and I thought for Fridays, I'd do something a wee bit different. One thing that was a firm tradition in our household growing up, and that was that we HAD to sit down, as a family (okay, Mom and the girls usually, although Glenn didn't complain TOO much) and watch The Nutcracker with Baryshnikov and Kirkland, first on PBS, then on our VHS player. So for the Fridays in December, I'm going to share some of my favorite scenes from this lovely, lovely ballet. (And yes, I would watch Baryshnikov tie his shoelaces. Or wake across a street. The man can MOVE.)

Today is the pas de deux from the beginning of the ballet, right after Clara kills the Mouse King.

*sigh* I'll be in my bunk.

There was a period when my kids watched this video obsessively. I love it too.

One of my sisters is a dancer in Ballet Austin and she's been dancing since she was 4. We were dragged to her ballet school's performance of the Nutcracker EVERY year for who knows how long. Since she moved to Austin several years ago, I haven't gone to see a Nutcracker performance (there's no point if my sister isn't there). I miss that old tradition, but there's something nice to watching and listening to it now.
