But what does it DO? What's the benefits vs. leaving it normal?

Friendly URLs tend to be easier to remember, pass around, etc. -- they look better to people visiting your site. And they get better search ranking because Google really likes the keywords in them.

I usually just enable them because there's no reason *not* to.

Gotcha! I'll definitely update that - I'll be working on the website either tonight or tomorrow. Gotta add some new stuff, and test the podcasting stuff.
