I got a bunch of interesting notes done for Belladonna, on the ShadowMasters, who are going to figure in the entire series.
More if you're interested...
1. What are the ShadowMasters?
a. ShadowMasters are powerful psychics who have willingly given up most of their mortality in order to protect the rest of humanity from certain places that are too haunted to remain unguarded.
2. How does one become a ShadowMaster?
a. When a ShadowMaster becomes aware that they are beginning to drift towards the Border, they send out a piece of themselves (known as an Essence) that contains a copy of all their knowledge of both the Ghostlands and being a ShadowMaster. This Essence is drawn to the psychic with the most potential in the area (about 50 miles radius). The Essence then settles deep within the new apprentice’s mind, where it begins to unlock the powers necessary to turn the person into a full ShadowMaster. This process can take up to two years to complete, as the apprentice’s body adjusts to the changes taking place. When the changes are almost complete, and the ShadowMaster is ready to step beyond the Border, he or she summons the apprentice and asks them to complete the process and accept the burden of becoming a ShadowMaster. Then the old ShadowMaster can go through the Crossing.
b. Occasionally, a ShadowMaster will be killed unexpectedly. When this happens, their Essence looks for the first receptive individual in the area and, depending on the circumstances of the ShadowMaster’s death, will either adapt the new apprentice or simply take them over. There have been ShadowMasters who have run into rogue ShadowMasters from time to time – it is assumed that these are apprentices that were taken over by an Essence and/or driven mad by the change.
3. Who rules the ShadowMasters?
a. No one. Each ShadowMaster is a solitary being – there is no ruling council or anything like that. However, each ShadowMaster knows of the location of all the ShadowMasters within a 500-mile radius of themselves. ShadowMasters only leave their appointed posts to meet with a new apprentice or to deal with a rogue passing through, due to the strength of the oath they take. Some ShadowMasters will take on students, although this is rare.
4. What can a ShadowMaster do?
a. ShadowMasters use over 90% of the psychic area of their brain. They have access to most, if not all, of the following abilities by the time they become full ShadowMasters, although it takes most of their extended lives to learn to fully utilize them:
i. Pyrokinesis
ii. Cryokinesis
iii. Telekinesis
iv. Telepathy
v. Empathy
vi. Shadow Weaving
vii. Psychometry
viii. Levitation
ix. Illusions
x. Psychic Healing
xi. Dream Weaving
xii. Psychomorphy
xiii. Precognition
I also got a bit done on Treaty - I think what's going to make the most sense for me is to do each plotline out separately, and then combine them all. Whew! What a task!
But worth it.
