Starting line: I made both Maggie and Alis go in and take naps that afternoon, since they were both starting to look a bit ragged, and I wanted us all awake and alert when the sun went down.
Ending line: I didn’t dare move at that point; I’d probably light something on fire, with my luck. So I stood in the center of the room as the fog around me faded, the dark, menacing shapes melting into nothingness, until finally the only thing left in the room was the dying embers of the sunset, barely visible out the window, and the soft silver glow of David as he slowly straightened up.
Darling: Tall, bleak, shrouded in a cold darkness that draped around it like rotting finery, the wraith turned to look at me, the blackness of the thing’s face pierced only by the red orbs it used as eyes.
