And damn, I am SO about the Christian symbolism. I'm not sure WHY (okay, okay, I'm writing about the Four Horseman, I get it) but wow.

So we all know that Val is completely obsessed with Yin and Yang - ultimate Balance, right? If that hasn't come through in my writing before, well, it's true. So it only makes sense that if there are three types of Elemental Lords outside of the World Walls, there MUST be three OTHER types WITHIN the World Walls, right?

Right.

For those who might not have read Not Your Father's Horseman (and why not??? j/k), the three types of supernatural beings that populate the world are Shadow Lords, Earth Lords and Dawn Lords. There are three realms involved in this world: the Shadow Lands, Earth and the Dawn Lands. Separating these worlds are the World Walls, and within those Walls is another entire world (known to most as the World Between the Walls).

Within the Walls, three other Lords live, and readers will meet one type in Dark Moon Seasons, the sequel to Horseman: the Chaos Lords. In a way, these should be the pinnacle of the Lords within the Walls (and many of them consider this to be the truth), since the Spirit of Chaos herself is the Yang to the Spirit of the Balance's Yin and many consider themselves to be directly descended from Her. But there had to be three sets of the Lords, because they had to mirror what was outside the Walls, and really, the Chaos Lords are not more important than any of their compatriots, for Chaos and Balance spun out all six Elemental races in conjuction with one another.

So we have Chaos Lords, but what else? This has been consuming me for the past two weeks, and I finally figured it out. My Chaos Lords were the opposites of the Shadow Lords - since the Shadow Lords are cold and analytical, and the Chaos Lords are anything but. To offset the Earth Lords, who live fully in this world, I have the Dream Lords, who have powers over the mind. And standing across from the warm and lively Dawn Lords, I have the Abyss Lords, who dwell in the voids.

There are other types of spirits and Mages who inhabit this cosmology: most specifically, Blood Mages/Spirits, and those who work in the Demonic spheres, but there are only the Six Elemental Lords. Which means a bit of a rewrite in Seasons (since I had originally conceived of Blood Lords, which are a cool theory but don't work in this cosmology, since I have quite a few Mages using Blood Magic in various forms), but that's okay. I can live with that.

Now that I've gotten that out of my system, it's time to write.

Interesting solution. I can't wait to see what kind of fruit it bears.

Yeah, it's feeling good right now, but we'll see if it holds up to scrutiny.

Although I really, really want to write the Shadow Wars now. I wonder what happened....

This is really interesting to me... I've been wrestling with something similar in one of my shelved WIPs -- three types of magic (which are the power ot directly manipulate physical / metaphysical forces). And now I'm jumping out of my seat waiting for the rest of your series... (ooooh, chaos.... :-D)

LOL. Well, you'll get the novella in November and the next book in February. :)

When are you going to finish writing YOURS so I can read it, huh?

Well, considering it's still just in the conceptual stage, if you really want to read it, I hope you're very very patient. ;-)

Looking forward to seeing your books, though!

Thanks!

Unfortunately it's opening all sorts of plotbunnies in my head. Now I wanna know more about these Abyss Lords!
