I arrived home after school very grumpy (it had been a long day, and I was tired), and then I looked out on the porch. In truth, I was trying to coax Sebastian inside so I could shut the door, but the sight of FIVE BOXES from my publisher changed my mood immediately!!!

I have books! Lots of books! Two boxes each of Not Your Father's Horseman with its new cover and Dark Moon Seasons, and one box of Writers for Relief, which has a StarChild story in it that I wrote. And since I have these lovely things, what else could I do but hold a contest?

So, here it is. Seasons doesn't launch officially until April 24th, but I love my fans, so I'm going to give away one prize pack to a lucky winner: one matched set of Horseman and Seasons, both autographed. A second winner will get a copy of Relief, also signed.

All you have to do? Tell me what Horseman you'd want to be, and why. I'll leave this thread open until Sunday, April 19th. At 5 pm EST that night, the thread closes. I'll draw two winners randomly and send the books out on my way to work Monday morning.

So enter! Tell everyone you know! Tweet it on Twitter (because I forgot my phone in my car and can't access Twitter from work)!

And yes, this means there will be books at RavenCon. :D

Edit: Feel free to repost this or link to it - the more entries, the better!

Edit the Second: And a new twist! One of the RL characters in the book, [livejournal.com profile] utilitygeek, has offered to sign the book as well! So you get not only MY signature, but one of the character's as well! How cool is that?

Lateral move with no pay raise

Horseman? Why would I want to be a Horseman, when I am Doom?
It's like giving up being Picard to be Kirk. Sure, it's cool in some ways, but really it's (at best) a lateral move.

So don't even consider me for your silly contest! Make me a Horseman -- Humbug!

Also, I get one of the books anyway. :-)

From: [identity profile] reboog711.livejournal.com

UtilityGeek sent me; and I'm intrigued. Never heard of your or the books before.

If I had to choose one, it'd be death. You get to carry a Scythe and let's face it all the other horsemen are just paving the path for Death. It's good to be on top.

From: [identity profile] vg-ford.livejournal.com

Welcome! And Death is very cool - in fact, she's the main character in the books. Good luck!

From: [identity profile] magicalbookworm.livejournal.com

I think i'm going to have to choose Death. Mostly because it seems far better then the others ;)
I'll post a link to this on my twitter page.

From: [identity profile] vg-ford.livejournal.com

Awesome, thanks!

And wow, two votes for Death! She's popular today! :D

From: [identity profile] bhadrasvapna.livejournal.com

I'd be War because I want to carry a really big sword.

And red horses are wicked.

From: [identity profile] vg-ford.livejournal.com

Red horses are wicked. And War gets all sorts of fun toys to play with, I agree.

Thanks!

From: [identity profile] jadecat.livejournal.com

I came over from [livejournal.com profile] urbanfantasyfan. :)

Since everyone else has chosen death- I'll go with Famine. But only because of the character from Good Omens. Food that isn't really food...

Anyway, Hi! congrats on the books. I can imagine how amazing that must feel. :)

From: [identity profile] vg-ford.livejournal.com

Welcome!

And yeah, I love that book. His Horsemen were SO much fun...

Thanks for the congrats - I'm wicked excited!

Death! Because before you my favorite Death was Terry Pratchett's Death, but his is a guy and I love that yours is a woman!

From: [identity profile] vg-ford.livejournal.com

Hee! Yeah, my Death is female, and really not a lot like Pratchett's, but a lot of fun nonetheless! Thanks for commenting!

From: [identity profile] entropyastaroth.livejournal.com

I found this through urbanfantasyfan too.

I haven't read your books, but they sound interesting. I also decided to check out the Horsemen on wiki and I wasn't aware of the other interpretations. So, I say I want to be Conqueror.
"And I beheld, and lo a white horse; and he that sat on him had a bow: and there was given unto him a crown, and he departed as conqueror and to conquest.""

Being Conqueror sounds interesting and not necessarily evil.

From: [identity profile] vg-ford.livejournal.com

Welcome!

Being Conqueror does sound interesting. My Horsemen aren't necessarily evil, though...

Then again, my definitions of good and evil in the books aren't exactly black and white either. :P

Here via [livejournal.com profile] urbanfantasyfan.

I would have to say War is my favorite of the Horsemen. Big sword, red horse, and fun toys? What's not to like? (There's also the War in Good Omens, which makes it all the better!)

Your series sounds really interesting. I'm going to have to see about getting my hands on it.

From: [identity profile] vg-ford.livejournal.com

Welcome!

War is fun - and yes, he really does have the best toys.

My Horsemen are a bit different from the norm, but I'm enjoying them. :D

From: [identity profile] silvarastar.livejournal.com

I would have to pick Death. The other horsemen seem so terrible or violent or painful.

I would say War since "War" by Edwin Starr started going through my head when I read your post.

Having a nifty sword is also a plus.

From: [identity profile] vg-ford.livejournal.com

Nifty swords are awesome. I shall have to give someone a nifty sword.

From: [identity profile] domynoe.livejournal.com

Either the conqueror or death...reasons? It probably all comes down to my control phreak nature...muahahahaha!!! *cough cough*

From: [identity profile] vg-ford.livejournal.com

Hehe - control phreaks are not a bad thing (says one major control freak). :D

Thanks!

From: [identity profile] suelder.livejournal.com

Sure, enter me.

I'd like to be plagues. It's sciencey and geeky enough, doncha think?

From: [identity profile] vg-ford.livejournal.com

Definitely geeky! And I think you'll like my Plague...

From: [identity profile] fireheart1974.livejournal.com

Okay...sucked into the geekiness. I came via facebook.

I'd also have to go with Death "On a Pale Horse" but because of Peirs Anthony's Incarnations of Immortality series.

Besides, your stuff has been on my list of need to reads since RavenCon07(?).

~Tera

From: [identity profile] vg-ford.livejournal.com

Woot! Welcome!

And yeah, Death has been my favorite always - I'll have to read Incarnations of Immortality.

Death

I choose the horseman Death because I already slaughter people. Yeah, they're pretend and all, and I get paid for the privilege, but still...

I swear I meant to get Not Your Father's Horseman back when it came out, but life happened, so this contest is SO for me :). Otherwise, I guess I'll have to get my act together.

As far as the horsemen, I have to go along with the crowd, but that's because Death has been my favorite forever. And I envision her female as well. Can't wait to see what you do with her.

Cheers,
Margaret

From: [identity profile] evulkoneko.livejournal.com

*thoughtful heel kicking*

This is rather like asking someone which superhero they want to be, or what superpower they want to have. I mean, each of the Horsemen has a unique set of abilities.

Death is the snazziest, but also the simplest, in a way. There isn't much variance. Death is death.

War is about the same, but war *evolves*. It changes all the time.

Famine, now, there we start getting inventive. Famines kill, sure - linking them to death - and they can start and end wars, which links back to death again via a weirdasss little network of lines. And what people do when they haven't got food, well...

And on top of that you've got pestilence. I think a lot of farmers can testify to the powers of giant flocks of insects, right? :) And the pestilences that can strike humans, 'course.

Hmmmmmm.

I think I would choose to be Pestilence, so I could start the party, bringing in Famine, War, and Death behind me.

From: [identity profile] vg-ford.livejournal.com

hehe - you and Sue! Plague was fun to write, definitely.

Four Horsing Around

He’s not mentioned by name in your books, but I’d like to be the Fifth Horseman, Erwin. Erwin doesn’t get a cool robe or armor like some of the rest of the troop. Most people can’t see him, and they don’t even talk about him. But he is important.

Erwin has the shovels.

Oh, he does other things, too. He holds the reins while Famine and Death argue with yet another pimply teenaged clerk about taking the horses through the Burger-Zowie’s drive through. (Pestilence won’t eat there, but he won’t hold the reins either).

Erwin is a fair hand with comforting The Pale Horse when Death lets her get into the oats.

But mostly I’d like to be Erwin because unlike the rest of the Horsemen, Erwin gets to ride a pony, and I’ve wanted a pony since I was 6 years old.

Re: Four Horsing Around

This is awesome. Just awesome.

I KNEW I was missing a Horseman!

From: [identity profile] ljcblue.livejournal.com

I can't decide. I'm not into the control trip of the conqueror, I like feeding people too much to be famine. Death is so final, and War is just too confrontive--not my personality at all. LOL.

Hope all is well with you, Val.

best,
lisa

I wanna be...

I wouldn't mind being famine. Famine is depicted (at least when I've seen the horseman in pictures) as eating, and quite simply, I like my food. He must have a magic bag of food or something, to keep him fed, which is something I could certainly enjoy.

From: [identity profile] vg-ford.livejournal.com

Re: I wanna be...

LOL! My Famine is a wee bit different - but she's very cool.

A magic bag of food sounds awesome, though. I need one of those!

Oh how wonderful! I have to confess, I have no read the series yet, but I'd love to read it! :)

From: [identity profile] vg-ford.livejournal.com

Thanks for commenting! I hope you do get to read it and enjoy it!

From: [identity profile] mossbeloved.livejournal.com

Oh man. If I couldn't be Death, I would attempt to be a very evil and very awesome Famine. I would be cruel and cunning and do all the things I shouldn't do. Like eat in front of starving peasants.

On the flip side, I would be a kind and merciful Death. *shrugs*
That's all so cool! I really DO need to read your books....

From: [identity profile] vg-ford.livejournal.com

You Do! And lol re: Famine - I wouldn't have thought she'd be so popular!

From: [identity profile] dragonmyst.livejournal.com

I would want to be pestilence.
There are all sorts of nasty ways to make a person ill. Fascinating to see it in action.

Why yes I watch The Stand every time I get sick...why do you ask? ;)

From: [identity profile] vg-ford.livejournal.com

Hehe - you might like my Plague, then - he's a Healer....

From: [identity profile] llwheeler.livejournal.com

hey Val!

I loved Nikki in Snow, so I'd be tempted to say I wanna be her, but actually no. I couldn't be. My favourite bit of her in Snow was when it all of a sudden showed in her eyes, the really old and dark and awesome (in the old sense of the word) power. So yeah. As much as I loved it, not for me.

I think I might choose Pestilence. Cause then I get to ride a purty white horse, and I've always loved white horses (says the 5 year old girl inside me). Also, I love the play with the ideas of good and evil, with plague (dark) on a white horse (light). Just neat as anything.

:)

From: [identity profile] vg-ford.livejournal.com

Hehe - another vote for Plague, then! (You do realize the darkness is in each of them, right?)
