I'm rewriting from mostly scratch, putting conflict and my bad guys on page one, with a little posturing on their part, in hopes that it will help.

It's better, what I have, but it doesn't quite wow me yet, and it is frustrating. I mean, a reverse explosion, alliums burnt to ash rising up and reforming themselves, how do you fuck that up?
