Dear Conservatives,

Congratulations. You have affirmed once again that you believe that all pigs are created equal, but some pigs are more equal than others. I'm proud of you for sticking to your guns. However, while this is still a free nation, I'm going to tell you how disappointed I am that you can't see past someone's gender and/or sexuality. Seriously.

I'm sorry that you feel threatened by the thought of two people who love each other being able to get married. I'm sorry that you believe that teaching hate (marriage is ONLY between a man and a woman and anything else is wrong/dirty/against the law) is better than teaching love (when two people love each other, they can make a lifelong commitment called marriage and have it recognized legally in the United States). And you've reaffirmed, again, why I don't think I could ever be a conservative.

But I'm going to close this on a positive note. The vote in Maine was closer than the vote in California, and I believe it will only continue to move in the direction that this nation was actually founded on: that ALL pigs are created equal. ALL. Not some pigs more equal than others.

And to paraphrase one of my favorite heroines, conservatives: The more you tighten your grasp, the more states will slip through your fingers.

No love,

Me

*pigs comments are allusions to George Orwell's Animal Farm, before I get flamed in the comments or the blogosphere for calling people names.

Washington has a similar vote going on, currently at 51% approval, but they're only halfway through counting the votes. I'm crossing my fingers.

Ooh, keeping my fingers crossed as well! I didn't know about Washington - keep us informed, please!

It's "everything but marriage" for Ref 71 (which is to say that they get all the rights of married people, just not the name marriage). It was actually passed earlier by the legislature, but the haters who are afraid that "marriage" is coming next got enough signatures on petitions to put it to a state-wide vote.

I believe in "everything, including marriage," but Washington has been baby-stepping toward that for a few years, and baby-steps are better than standing still.

Oh yes. And if this passes, then it is only one more baby step to everything.

As disappointed as I am in the votes, I am also very disappointed that you need to footnote your Orwell reference to avoid flames. Not sure what that says about the internet community, but I don't think I like it.

I *think* it says that the evidence *seems* to indicate the internet community tends to be a tad uneducated and overly volatile... but then I'm sure you knew that.

What Mac said. Sadly, I don't know that Orwell is taught much in schools anymore.

Yes it was very close, and as Red sox fans know, "there's always next year"

True! I wonder if there can be a referendum to repeal the repeal? I should look into that, see if it can be brought up again.

Well maybe it can't be changed immediately I don't know, but I don't think any laws were written to be on the books forever. I mean look at prohibition, and that was a constitutional amendment.

The day that a political party can openly insist that its candidates reject moderate viewpoints and still win elections is the day that I leave this country. I refuse to be trampled upon by anti-thought wingnuts.

Very disappointed, but not surprised. I won't be spending money on or in Maine anytime soon.

From: [identity profile] vg-ford.livejournal.com

I will, because not all of Maine voted against gay marriage. 47% voted for it, and since I can't tell who voted what way, I'm not going to punish an entire state for the fear of some of them. Just my opinion.
