It's been a weird week for me. Monday was the only day that was really "normal" - the rest of the week I've been at my parents' house, and at various doctors' appointments. It's a little surreal, but I'll get over it. Next week is a semi-normal week, then I'm off again the week after for another round of doctors and treatments. I'm torn between feeling happy that they can depend on me (and know they can) and wanting to go back to being the kid again. Not pretty, but there it is.

And I'm writing again. I decided to go back to Velvet Box - I need Mom to read Dark Moon Seasons so I can bounce ideas off of her for the last book. So back to the novella.

I realized last night that I really didn't like the 3rd person take on this. I realized this morning that I need to get back to the strengths of my writing and storytelling: namely, explosions, magic, body counts and sassy heroines. (I love the word sassy, btw. It's just such an awesome word.) So today, I'm going to do some freewriting, add some damn magic into my world, give my heroine a backbone and figure out how to make the really good story in my head make its way onto the computer screen.

But first, I need tea.

I wondered which of my elegant ancestors had pinned up their wealth of hair with the pins, then swore as one of the pins shifted and stabbed me in the hand.

“Come with me,” he said, and led me, not down the stairs, but off to one side. Still blinded by something, I couldn’t resist, nor did I want to.

darling:
Jasmine filled my nose, wrapping around me in a sweet fog that blinded me for a long moment, and I put my hand out to steady myself. The banister was warm, smooth wood under my fingers, and I clung to it as the world spun around me. What was going on?

Yes, that's a negative word count you see there. I discovered, after carefully plotting out the 3rd person POV version, that I liked the 1st person POV version better. AND then I had a brainstorm. Now I just have to work out the particulars, but this will be a MUCH stronger story. I just have to decide how much magic I want to use - and whether or not my MC survives.

Sometimes it doesn't always work out the way I thought it would, but I think I can salvage a bit from the plot summary I did before, for the 3rd person POV. And yeah, I think lots of magic. Maybe Ally's background is more magical than even she thought...

Let me know if you think I should add anything more to it!
Because I really feel I should use more of them than I do. And Kitty and Lockheed are just cool.

I have not seen the Wolverine movie yet - maybe we'll see that this weekend, along with Star Trek. It depends on the boyo and what he wants to do.

Had my sleep study last night - very odd experience. They had me try out a CPAP machine in the middle of the night - they say I slept better after that, although I felt like I woke up a few times. Might have just been dreams, though. I felt really good this morning, though, so hey, if it works, I'll wear it! I want one that covers my nose and mouth, though. Just the nose one left me with a dry feeling in my mouth this morning.

I'm off work for the next week to take care of some personal things - I'll still be blogging, though. And writing. My goal is to have a rough draft of Velvet Box done by next Sunday.

Then it's time to start working on Last Rites. Also, be on the lookout for some emails/posts from the Admiral and his secretary on the Dept. V stuff (which I am WOEFULLY behind on and I apologize!) - they're coming!

Oh, and just because WOKQ played it this morning, in honor of Star Trek coming out, I give you The Firm:

Edited to add: Seeing Wolverine tonight, and have promised [livejournal.com profile] irysangel that I will post a review. And my doctor called - they have the results of my sleep study already. O.o I'm getting a CPAP.

ending line:
“I’m fine. It’s just a scratch.” And it was; the cut had stopped bleeding after one single red drop welled out and dropped onto the hair pins. Or she’d thought that was where it had dropped, but as she looked at where they lay on the floor, she could find no sign of the blood. And the scratch on her hand was clean.

darling:
Allegra Ross turned at the squeal from her best friend and shuddered, then burst into laughter. Leigh MacAllister was preening and primping, blinking her eyelashes like something was caught in her contacts and patting the monstrosity on her head as if it were a pet. It might have been a hat, several generations ago. Maybe. Right now, it looked as if Leigh were wearing a silk box that had vomited ribbons and feathers in a series of ill-planned explosions.

“Good lord, Leigh, where did you find that...thing? Take it off and throw it out before it sucks your brain out!” Ally barely managed to choke out around her giggles.

“Throw it out?” Leigh’s eyes bugged out, and Ally wondered for a moment if she were right. “This is a VINTAGE hat!”

“It’s a vintage something, all right,” Ally shot back. “I’m not sure it’s a hat. It might walk off with your wallet if you take your eyes off it.”

Take 2. Writing this in 3rd person is at once harder and easier.
Ah yes, it's a Monday.  I've already realized that I forgot the books to send to [livejournal.com profile] utilitygeek , I forgot the other books for my classmates, and I forgot to toast my muffin this morning, so I couldn't eat it. *headdesk*  Yep, definitely a Monday.

On the other hand, it's a glorious day, my pansies didn't die overnight, I remembered to grab my lunch and start the crockpot, and my Sebastian-kitten was amazingly cuddly this morning, so it's all good.  We'll see how cuddly he is on Wednesday, when he goes to the vet.

Busy day today - I start two classes (property law and family law), so I'll be going until 10:20 pm tonight.  I've got a to-do list, too:
  1. Do my merit writeup for work
  2. CLEAN DESK!!!!
  3. Pass around birthday card
  4. Update activity posts
  5. Update www.50millionpounds.com with my current weight
  6. Balance checkbook
  7. Start Velvet Box rewrite
Busy, busy, busy!

Plot summary for Velvet Box is done!  Now to do scenes, decide POVS and write the damn thing.

Today, all in all, was a good day.  I hope you guys had one too.

Now, to make dinner for tomorrow (ie, throw everything in the crock pot), make lunch for tomorrow for me, and head to bed.

Night, all!

Good morning, world!

It's a good day - all my kitties are home, the Sox won last night and I got stuff from my publisher!  Yay for swag!  I sense a mailing for Dept. V agents soon!

Speaking of mailing, [livejournal.com profile] utilitygeek , I have the address for our last winner and will be sending you everything tomorrow.

Today I have lots to do:

1. Clean up after the Cinco de Mayo party!
2. Dig up garden beds and edge with bricks.

3. Make chili for the week.
4. Bake bread.  I'm jonesing for some good homemade bread.
5. Clean the kitchen.

6. Do laundry.
7. Work more on VB's summary.
8. Grocery shopping.
9. Visit the Pumpkin over at Mom and Dad's.
10. Make [livejournal.com profile] asakiyume 's CD.

Busy day.  Better get my arse in gear!

Or afternoons, as the case may be. We're at Mom and Dad's, watching the Red Sox and enjoying the amazing smells that are coming out of the kitchen. Mom is such a good cook. And pound cake smells so yummy in the oven...

Writing this afternoon - I want to finish the plot summary and start the outline for VB, so I can get that going. Dad's getting me flower seeds (yay!) so Tuesday I can start digging the small flower bed in the yard. I'm getting pansies today too (we're stopping at Walmart so I can get stuff) and I cannot wait. Expect lots of pictures over the summer.

And my forsythia is blooming!

Happy Sunday!
Finally.

This is like pulling teeth, because it's not fully outlined. Maybe I should do that first...

Yes, it's going out.
Um, I forgot to post these yesterday.

Word Goal for the day: 750 - made 663

Starting line: Something soft brushed against my skin; frowning, I moved aside yet another hat box (Great-Aunt Sophie had been obsessed with hats, and shoes, and purses – the monstrosity was most likely hers) and found a true treasure.

Ending line: She continued to speculate all the way down the stairs, the story growing by leaps and bounds.

Darling: Under the handkerchief lay more treasures. Two locks of hair, one dark and one light, intertwined into an intricate braid, flowed over a set of jeweled hair pins. These were peacock feathers again, but of ruby, sapphire and emerald fire, not threads, and the long silver pins that they sat upon were tarnished and worn. I wondered which of my elegant ancestors had pinned up their wealth of hair with the pins. As I picked up the braid, something else caught the light above us and flashed fire.

Inspiration du jour: Les Miserables soundtrack (the London cast)
